Japanese bank using fingerprint authentication at its ATMs

Japan’s Aeon Bank will be introducing ATMs that allow clients to access their account using only fingerprints for identification.

The bank will open up fingerprint registration on February 15 with the goal of having the technology ready to use by late March.

The first of the fingerprint-reading ATMs will be installed at a store in Tokyo. The bank hopes to eventually operate around 5,500 units throughout Japan.

Clients who register their fingerprints with the bank will be able to make deposits, withdrawals and transfers as well as check their account balances.

Aeon Bank is partnering with Tokyo-based startup Liquid on this project.

Just last month it was announced that Liquid is implementing a biometric payment system at numerous stores across Japan, authorizing customers to purchase goods and services with just their fingerprints and veins.
