Hundreds of drivers and cyclists were surprised on Thursday (November 13) by flash floods in normally dry creeks in the eastern Israeli Judea Desert.
13일(현지시간) 승용차와 자전거를 타고 이스라엘 동부 유대 사막을 여행하던 사람들은 눈을 의심하지 않을 수 없었다. 평소에는 물이 흐르지 않는 곳에 돌발 홍수가 발생, 급류가 흐르고 있었던 것이다.

The 'Wheels of Love' cyclists group, on a 5-day tour aiming to raise money for a hospital treating disabled children, managed to film several of the floods as they were stranded.
자전거를 타는 사람들의 모임인 ‘휠스 오브 러브(Wheels of Love)’는 장애 어린이들의 병원 치료 기금을 마련하기 위해 5일 간 여행 중이었다. 이들은 홍수 때문에 오도가도 못하게 됐을 때, 홍수 장면을 촬영해냈다.

The drivers and riders waited for bulldozers who cleared the road from rubble before they attempted to cross over in the dangerous stream.
승용차와 자전거를 타고 있던 사람들은 이 위험한 개울을 건너려 하기 전, 도로 위의 잔해들을 치울 불도저를 기다렸다.

The Judea Desert, locked between the Judea ridge to the west and the Great African Rift Valley to the east, receives only 150 mm of rain on an average year.
동쪽으로는 유대 산맥, 서쪽으로는 그레이트 아프리카 리프트 밸리를 끼고 있는 유대 사막은 연평균 강수량이 150mm 정도 밖에 안 된다.

Still, rains on the western side of the mountains and around Jerusalem cause flash floods several times a year, which endanger hikers and drivers caught off guard.
지금까지도 유대산 서부 지역과 예루살렘 주변에 내린 비로 인해 1년에 여러 차례 돌발 홍수가 발생했으며, 이로 인해 도보 여행자들과 운전자들이 위험에 빠진다.
